Year 7, Day 186: Joshua 1

Today we switch to Joshua.  Moses is dead.  Joshua assumes command.  He’s three days from leading the people across the Jordan and into the biggest conquest of Hebrew history.  How’s that for pressure?

I think that’s exactly why we hear the same message again and again: be strong and courageous.  God says it to Joshua many times.  The people also tell this message to Joshua.  They are behind him.  They will follow him.  They will listen to his commands.  All they ask is that he is strong and courageous.

It's amazing what a little courage can do in life.  With courage, we can accomplish things that are difficult.  With courage, we can inspire the people around us to also do amazing things, too.  We need to live and act with courage.  We need to live and act in strength.

The people have a right to expect strength and courage from Joshua, too.  Joshua has a right to expect them to be willing to follow; they have a right to expect strength and courage.  Both things are necessary for a group to move.  The people must be willing to follow.  The leader must have strength and courage when the people are willing to follow.

Today we turn a page in God’s plan.  Today, several centuries of promise begin to become reality.  What’s important is that the people are ready to act upon it.
